Habitat: frequent in grassland/savanna with scattered post oak, mesquite, and eastern red cedar, in deep, well drained but seasonally saturated, slightly acid fine sandy loam Udertic Paleustalfs (Crockett Series) over claypan of Calvert Bluff Formation (Eocene) on ridgetop and gentle upper slope.
