USA, Arizona, Maricopa, Maricopa County: Grown in cultivation at the Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, AZ, N 33° 27’ 33” W 111° 56’ 35”, 1200 ft., 366 m; accession number 1982 0021 0607 originally received as a plant collected by Victor Gass 29 January 2002 with Patrick Quirk and S. Priebe from Arizona, Maricopa County, in the area directly S. of Pinnacle Peak, in cooperation with Richard Bailey and the Highlands Developement Company as part of a plant salvage in the vicinity of the given coordinates; collector's notes: plant growing on rock-decomposed granite with Larrea, Ambrosia, Cercidium.
Description:
Plant 4 feet tall by 6 feet wide; base is woody, gray, slightly tuberculate, stems gray-green to purplish-gray-green to gray; older spines light brown or gray, newer spines golden to light reddish-brown with sheaths; flowers collected in the afternoon, diameter 34-50 mm, length 46-50 mm, outer perianth yellow-bronze with a wide reddish-brown midstripe, inner perianth yellow with a maroon streak prominent at the center; stigma lobe number 5-7, pale yellow-green; style creamy yellow; filaments maroon; fruit dry, covered in spines, tan or gray, diameter 14-18 mm, length 18-24 mm; seeds tan, 1 per fruit.
