Locality: USA, Texas, Cultivated at Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, Arizona, accession no. 1967 8865 0102; originally collected by H. S. Gentry 9881, from Texas, Rio Pecos and Highway 90, 20 miles west of Pecos, on limestone, ''acaulescent, caespitose, common, stalks 2.5-3 m tall.''
Description: Inflorescence subspicate, flowers stout, slightly zygomorphic, with little, if any nectar, ovary and tube lime green, tepals (especially outer edge and distal 1/2) deep maroon, glaucous on outside, flaring (25 mm across tips), tepal tips on some recurved, stle, stigma, filaments deep maroon, wide, anthers yellow; measurements after Gentry (1982), in mm, during anthesis: tl=39.5 (tepals straightened out), o=18x7, n=5, tep=17.5x6, 16x7, tu=1x8, fil ins=1, fil=42, sty=30; tl=37, n=3.5, o=19x7, tu=1x7, tep=17x5.5, 17x7, fil ins=1, fil=41, sty=29.
