Mexico, Baja California, Maricopa County: Grown in cultivation at Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, N 33 deg 27' 33'', W 111 deg 56' 35'', 1200 ft., 366 m: accession number 1973 0244 0102; originally received as a plant collected by Donald Pinkava 8786, 1 January 1971 with Lyle McGill, Mexico, Baja California Norte, Route 1, 5.5 miles east of Rosario and 4.5 miles north east (left fork) to Rancho flats in alluvial soil above arroyo.

Flowers collected afternoon and morning, diameter 31-40 mm, length 49-57 mm; outer perianth yellow-green or bronze with a reddish-brown midstripe at tip; inner perianth pale olive green with a reddish-brown midstripe; thigmotrophic positive; stigma lobe number 4-6, color yellow; filament reddish-brown; ovary/base of flower covered with long reddish-brown glochids; joints gray-green with mature joints gray; spines gray on older joints, tan with golden sheaths on newer; areoles slightly tuberculate, with few spine clusters; additional flowers collected 27 May 2003, 5 May 2005, 16 May 2005.
