Locality: USA, Arizona, Maricopa, Maricopa County: Grown in cultivation at Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, N 33 deg 27' 33'', W 111 deg 56' 35'', 1200 ft., 366 m: accession number 2005 0296 0101; originally received as a plant collected by Marc Baker 11285 with Bob Johnson, 7 February 1994; Arizona, Pima County, 1.5 km west of Big Wash; elevation 2870 feet; T11S R13 E Section 25 SE1/4 SW 1/4, South quadrant; Collector's notes: dissected lower bajada with Acacia greggii, Acacia constricta, Ambrosia ambrosioides, Ambrosia deltoidea, Atriplex canescens, Baccharis sarothroides, Brickellia coulteri, Calliandra eriophylla, Carnegia gigantea, Celtis pallida, Cercidium microphyllum, Cercidium floridum, Condalia warnockii, Echinocereus fasciculatus, Encelia farinosa, Ephedra trifurca, Ericameria laricifolia, Erigeron divergens, Ferocactus wislizeni, Fouquieria splendens, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Hymenoclea salsola, Isocoma tenuisecta, Krameria parvifolia, Larrea tridentata, Porophyllum gracile, Prosopis velutina, Psilostrophe cooperi, Senna covesii, Sphaeralcea ambigua, Trichachne californica, Zinnia acerosa, Ziziphus obtusifolia, Lycium spp., Opuntia spp., Cylindropuntia spp.. Plant description: Shrub 2.5 m tall with a single trunk, diameter 1.5 m; stems dark green, tinged purple above, young branches drooping, ultimate stems moderately easily detached; fruit generally yellow, tinged orange-red, especially near the areoles, chains of two common; no cloning apparent; the large size, sweet-sour tast, and pulpy texture of the fruit suggest historical use by humans; n=11 during meiosis of microsporogenesis, 2 April 1999, from individual cutivated at the Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, AZ.

Description: Flower diameter 63 mm, length 66 mm, outer perianth rusty mauve with darker rust midstripe and dark tips, inner perianth rusty mauve with dark center and dark tips, flower collected at noon; stigma lobe number 6, color light yellow; style is red; fleshy fruit collected 20 September 2005 by Trealease and Foisy, diameter 25-31 mm, length 44-50 mm, color green, seeds golden, 4.5 mm.
