Plant: Dioecious tree (mature plants to 12 m)
Leaves: leaves alternate, obovate, sandpapery, margins serrate
Flowers: flowers small, in catkins, male catkins elongate, female catkins becoming thick and succulent in fruit
Fruit: an aggregate berry turning purple.
Notes: Both male and female flowers in calkins. Fruit like a blackberry with multiple achenes with in fleshy calyces.
Major leaves are pinnately veined, others palmately veined.
