Plant: Annual branching forb 20-30 cm Leaves: cauline, opposite, lance-ovate with undulate-toothed margins 3-6 cm long, hairy, tip acute, INFLORESCENCE: clusters cyme-like at branch tips; involucre 2-3 mm, bell-shaped, glabrous; glands 1-2, < 1 mm, cupped Flowers: flowers monoecious borne in cyathia; petaloid appendages absent, glands of the involucre cup-shaped; Staminate flowers < 50, generally in 5 clusters around pistillate flower; Pistillate flower: 1, central, stalked; ovary chambers 3, ovule 1 per chamber, styles 3, divided > 1/2 length Fruit: 4-5 mm, spheric, lobed, glabrous; Seed 2-3 mm, ovoid, 3-angled, gray to brown, with warty protuberances Misc: Waste places, disturbed sites; < 300 m.
