Plant: Annual forb to 10 cm, rounded to cushion-like or taller than wide; taproot generally red, generally purple when dry; stem branched throughout; branches spreading to erect, strigose Leaves: < 1 cm, simple, entire, linear to narrowly oblanceolate, short-bristly; hairs ± ascending; basal whorled; cauline generally opposite below, alternate above INFLORESCENCE: cymes, axillary and terminal, generally dense in fruit, bracted Flowers: sepals free, ± 1-1.5 mm, ± 2 mm and linear-oblong in fruit, hairs like leaves; corolla generally white, tube generally 1-13 mm, appendages 5, white to yellow, corolla limb 0.5-3.5 mm wide; anthers included; ovary generally 4-lobed Fruit: Fruit: nutlets generally 4, ± 1 mm, ± lanceolate, back white-granular to tubercled, sometimes smooth, shiny, groove on inside surface generally flared open only at base Misc: Sandy soils; 200-2300 m.; Mar-Jun
