Plant: Annual 10-30(40) cm; stem simple to branched throughout; branches ascending to erect, generally strigose and spreading-rough-hairy Leaves: 1-4 cm, simple, entire, linear to narrowly oblanceolate, appressed bristly to rough-hairy, some or all hairs bulbous-based; basal whorled; cauline generally opposite below, alternate above INFLORESCENCE: cymes, generally dense in fruit; lowest flowers sometimes not touching, bracted Flowers: sepals 1.5-2 mm, 2-3 mm and linear in fruit, densely rough- to long-soft-hairy, hairs ascending, sometimes spreading-bristly; corolla generally white, tube generally 1-13 mm, appendages 5, white to yellow; anthers included; ovary generally 4-lobed Fruit: Fruit: nutlets 1-2, 1.5-2 mm, lanceolate, smooth, shiny (if 2, 1 with back smooth, shiny, other fine-granular), groove on inside surface ± closed to near base, edges overlapping Misc: Sandy to gravelly soils; < 1500 m.; Mar-May References: J.C.
