Habitat: Open overgrazed shrub-grassland dominated by Fouquieria splendens on north-facing gentle slope.
Substrate: Stony/loamy alluvium, reddish, brown fine soil.
Associated Species: Fouquieria splendens, Aloysia wrightii, Sporobolus, Cylindropuntia spinosior, Prosopis velutina, Dasylirion wheeleri, Nolina microcarpa, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Solanum elaeagnifolium, Isocoma tenuisecta, Jatropha macrorhiza, Mortonia scabrella.
Description: Plants frequent, this one very large, with huge cabeza, leaves gray-green with maroon flush adaxially, flower stalk ca 8 m tall, 127 mm in diameter at eye level, inflorescence broadly paniculate, with 25 lateral branches perpendicular to stalk, these long, some 5/6 to 1 m long, down 4/5 of stalk, bracts shredded on stalk (and on all flowering plants observed in area); flower with ovary, neck, tube light chartreuse green(-cream), outer lobes cream (-light chartreuse) with maroon flush, with conspicuous very brown, roughened tip, inner tepals cream (-light chartreuse), keel slightly flushed with maroon, filaments cream, deeply flushed with maroon, anthers purple, pollen yellow, style deep purple-maroon; flowers thick, ovary angled, tepals clasping; measurements after Gentry (1982) in mm: tl=69, o=35x8.5, n=8, tu=17(h)x15(w), outer tep=12(l)x6.75(w, base), 5(mid), inner tep=11x7(w, base), 3.5(mid), fil ins=7, 6, fil=58, a=20, beginning dehiscence, sty=60; tl=68, o=35x7.5, n=7, tu=16(h)x15(w), outer tep=12(l)x6.5(w, base), 5(mid), inner tep=10x6(w, base), 5.5(mid), fil ins=7, 6.2, fil=50, a=21, beginning dehiscence, sty=50.
