Habitat: limestone hills and associated alluvial plains
Associated Species: Aristida purpurea, Baccharis pteronioides, Berberis trifoliolata, Bouteloua curtipendula, B. eriopoda, Dalea formosa, Echinocereus pectinatus, Fallugia paradoxa, Gutierrezia sarothrae, Mimosa biuncifera, Nolina texana, Opuntia macrocentra, O. phaeacantha, Parthenium incanum, Pleuraphis muticus, Prosopis glandulosa, Rhus microphylla, Scleropogon brevifolius, Tridens muticus, Yucca glauca, and Zinnia grandiflora.
Description: Locally abundant over at least several Km5, especially abundant to the west, along dirt road; fruit spines collected from individual in cultivation at Chino Valley, Az. for SEM studies; n=22 during meiosis of microgametogenesis, April 2005; from individual cultivated Chino Valley, Arizona.
