Mexico, Baja California Sur, Grown in cultivation at Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, N 33 deg 27' 33'', W 111 deg 56' 35'', 1200 ft., 366 m: accession number 1993-0586-01-1; originally received as a plant collected by Marc Baker 8714 with Bob Johnson 29 February 1992 from Mexico Baja California Sur, South of Mexico 1;Santa Maria Wash between Cerro Colorado and Cerro Guatamote, just east of Meas San Regis, 8.3 miles ENE of Guamuchil and ca. 8 miles ENE of San Ingnacio; collector's notes: associated species-Opuntia cholla, Lophocereus schottii, Prosopis, Hymenoclea, Larrea tridentata, Lupinus, Pachycereus pringlei, Cercidium microphyllum, Jatropha cinerea, Acacia greggii, and Ambrosia; plant description-Openly-branched shrub 1.9m tall, 2m broad; stems gray-green, glaucous; spines straw-yellow as are the sheaths; flower buds very young; no fruits found. Photo; no chromosome number determination; habitat-flood plain. Originally received as Opuntia sp. ID by Marc Baker.

Plant height 4 feet, width 3 fee; joints and stems are gray, yellow-green or gray-green with some purple sun damage; spines golden with sheaths, one long,central spine, older spines gray; flowers collected in the morning, diameter 32-40 mm, length 52-58 mm, outer perianth mauve-brown with an olive greenish-red mid-stripe, inner perianth golden with mauve mid-stripe, additional flowers collected later in April; stigma lobe number 3-5, light yellow-green; style pale yellow-green at base and mauve at top; filament rosy-mauve; fleshy fruits collected 1 October 2013, diameter 12-18 mm, length 24-33, yellow-green, sterile.
