Habitat: Pinyon-Juniper-Scrub Oak community. Open, disturbed area with full sun; basalt gravel with clay; Red Ware or Verde Brown pot shards on ground.
Associated Species: Juniperus coahuilensis, Juniperus deppeana, Quercus turbinella, Pinus monophylla, Cercocarpus montanus, Agave parryi, Opuntia engelmannii, O. phaeacantha, Coryphantha vivipara, Garrya flavescens, Arctostaphylos pungens.
Description: Common herbaceous perennial; height 15 inches; leaves opposite, spinose; phyllaries recurved; purple rays, yellow discs.
Reproductive Condition: Flowering.
