Steep-sided ridges of bedded sedimentary rocks, dropping to narrow, winding canyon bottoms. ÒOsito FlatÓ area with deeper, clay soil situated on extensive break in slope. Entire area burned in August 1996. Before burn the vegetation was relatively open chaparral of Adenostoma fasciculatum, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Ceanothus cuneatus, and Cercocarpus betuloides community.
On slopes, grassland with Stipa, Avena fatua, and Hemizonia fasciculat at ÒOsito Flat.Ó At present time, post-fire annuals well developed, especially Lotus salsuginosus, Lotus wrangelianus, Camissonia californica, Cryptantha muricata, Phacelia viscida, Emmenanthe penduliflora, and Salvia columbariae.
