Sonoran Desert upland vegetation, south facing slope of a small hill. Disturbed by cattle.
Sandy loam, with course grains from decomposing granite.
One stem, 52cm tall, 27 cm wide, 21 ribs. Outer tepals maroon-red with yellow margins, 1-3 cm. Inner tepals yellow with maroon midstripe, 3-4.5 cm. Outer filaments maroon, 1.5cm turning yellow and shorter toward the center. Anthers yellow. Styles yellow turning slightly maroon toward the apex, 3 cm, the basal first cm fused, separating to 25 lobes above. Areols dark gray, 1cm wide 3cm long. Spines reddish turning yellow at the apex. Central spines to 11 cm, lateral spines 5-7, 2.5 to 5.5 cm. One observed in the area.
