Heart Lake - Prairie fen surrounding lake. Appears to be heavily encroached by invasives (Phalaris arundinacea, Typha angustifolia, Phragmites australis) surrounded by wooded upland. Heron rookery on southwest side around to the north side. Most of rookery old, but a few nests remain. Shoe Lake - Lakeside fen surrounded by woodland. Similar to Heart Lake. No management apparent. 30m west of woodland border. Entered woodland from trail where the trail curves south. Cannot see lake from here. Carex dominant with strong shrub layer (25-30% canopy) of Rhamnaceae and beech or elm. Hickory, non-poison sumac, and Toxicodendron vernix. Ground moist but not wet.
Population - Many small clumps fruiting underneath larger Craex, sometimes on slight hummocks of ground, someitmes between. Associated with Carex, Solidago patula, and moss.
