On the tops and sides of sedge hummocks (probably frost heaved), most common where the sedges are less successful and the alkaline crust is very highly developed.

Phlox sibrica L. subsp. pulvinata (Wherry) W.A. Weber, det. W.A. Weber, May 26 1994. Original ID: Phlox kelseyi ssp. salina. Never found on the level alkaline flats. A few yards east of the highway between the old railroad grade and a small stream, where a population of Pentaphylloides comes away from the base of the adjacent butte.
