Alluvium over old lake sediments, gentle slope with clay and gravel, probably ± alkaline; sparse low shrubs, Encelia farinosa, Atriplex, Lycium brevipes etc., but no Larrea or Ambrosia present.
Common 30-50 cm tall dioecious subshrub, plants wider than tall. Widespread and conspicuous here -- one of the two common perennials, along with Encelia.
